Oppo Find 5 vs Find 7.

December 2012, Oppo announced its flagship phone. The Find 5. For those of you who aren't following tech lately, Oppo is the chinese OEM manufacturing some of the most elegant and powerful phones keeping the prices low. Now when the company launched it flagship for 2012, every tech enthusiast started comparing the Find 5 with the latest from the likes of Samsung, Lg and Htc. Thats because the Find 5 had the most powerful specs of the time. But Oppo launched the phone just for the chinese market. The phone never made it overseas. Although you could always get it shipped. But a lot of techy people could never get their hands on the great phone Oppo had to offer.

Now with 2014 already kicked in, Oppo has just announced their latest and greatest Find 7. So lets get on and see what changes have Oppo made to the Find 5 with the launch of Find 7. As is, Oppo has launched 2 variants of the Find 7. The Find 7 and the Find 7a. Where the Find 7a is the low specced version of the Find 7. So we'll be considering the Find 7 instead of the lower specced 7a.

Hardware

In terms of hardware, there not more to be changed. But the find 7 has got a carbon fibre back with aluminium sides whereas the Find 5 had opted for aluminium bodies. But even using carbon fibre instead of aluminium which most people think feels more premium on smartphones named after fruits, Oppo has shown us that they can make any phone have a premium feel.

Display

Here's where Oppo shows its true abilities. When the Find 5 was launched, Oppo was the first company to have brought a phone with a 1080p display on a 5" screen. With the launch of Find 7, Oppo has carried the trend. The find 7 has a 5.5" IPS LCD touchscreen with a first in class 2560*1440 (QHD) resolution. This makes Oppo to be the firts OEM to have introduced a 1440p display on smartphones. Both the phones have the same tech beneath the display. Its just the size and the resolution that has changed.

Storage

The Find 5 launched with a 16/32 GB on board storage with no slot for memory expansion. Bu the Find 7 has fulfilled that flaw. The 7 has 32 GB of on board storage along with a memory card slot that supports expansion upto 128 GB.

The amount of RAM has also been upped from 2 GB in find 5 to 3 GB in the find 7.

Camera

Here's where Oppo has played the trick. The original Find 5 launched with a 13 MP camera. But the Find 7 is some what gimmicky in this area. Here's why.!

The find 7 has same 13 MP camera on the back, but this time, this camera is able to take shots of 50 MP. Here's where the trick is played. The Find 7 comes with a "Super Zoom" software, which combines 4 images into one 50MP image. When you hit the shutter the phone will take 10 quick shots and automatically select the best 4 for your super image. Pretty neat trick, isnt it.!!

OS

It was so obvious for the Find 7 to be launched with Android KitKat since KitKat's been out for 7 months. But that didn't happen. The Find 7 launched with Android 4.3 KitKat. While on the other hand, the Find 5 launched with Android 4.1 which was the latest at the time the phone launched. But I'm sure Oppo is preparing for an update to KitKat. Because its one of the key factors that helps the phone catch up with competitors in the crowded Android space.

Battery

The 5 launched with a 2500 mAh battery that was considered pretty hefty at that time, but the 7 launches with a 3000 mAh battery while the competition are giving 3300 and 3400 mAh batteries. Although this time, the Find 7's battery has the stepped charging enhancement that'll help the phone get charged from 0% to 75% in just 45 minutes. Atleast that's what the company claims. Only real world tests can show how it really performs.

The find 7 does have some good software features bundled in Oppo's ColorOS. Much of those are purely about gestures.

Swiping from the left of the status bar brings down the gesture window where in you can draw any gesture and call any app of feature assigned to it. The gesture feature also works when the phone is on stand by giving you quick shortcuts without having to unlock the phone and going finding the app.

Now this one's the best of all and pretty gimmicky according to me. When in standby mode, you hold the volume down button and wave the phone in air. This also does the same thing that the display gesture does, but the hand gesture seems a bit more enjoyable. Although doing it in public, you might make a fool of yourself.

So thats it. We do agree that Oppo's been giving a tough competition to major OEMs along with those titled as the premium smartphone makers.
