HTC One (M8). First Impressions.

HTC has now finally - after so many leaks - launched its flagship for 2014. While HTC has opted to carry the same name as the predecessor, The new One does carry some new features and an upgraded hardware. Here's the first impression of the new One. Verizon-branded-All-New-HTC-One-M8-dummy At first glance, the phone does look similar to the One 2013 but a closer looks reveals the more curved edges than the previous One. Some people may like this more curvy design, others simply wont. The whole back panel seems to have got a refurbish from the previous design. Its now having a glossy finish with too much curved corners. The back of the phone is also home to a dual camera sensor and a dual LED flash. The results of the dual camera sensors are yet to be concluded. More on the Camera later. HTC-One-M8 The front of the phone still has the dual stereo speaker which was a much appreciated feature of the Original One. But the size of the top speaker is reduced due to the more curved edge of the phone. On the right of the top speaker is the usual set of sensors - which were previously placed on left of the speaker - like proximity and light sensors. Going far from the speaker in same direction, we reach the front facing camera. Below the 5" screen is the black bar housing the HTC logo just above the bottom speaker. Thats all on the front of the device. HTC with the new One opted to go with the On Screen buttons. HTC-One-2014-Dummy-Unit-001-1280x952 The top of the phone houses the Power button. Whereas the micro USB and the 3.5mm headphone jack lies on the bottom. The left side houses the sim tray. While the volume rocker is on the right. This was all about the external hardware. Now lets us jump to the internal hardware aspect of the phone.   The One 2014 is powered by a Snapdragon 801 SOC that is the chip for almost all 2014 flagships. The USA and European version is clocked at 2.3 GHz while the Asia, China version is clocked at 2.5 GHz. Both these versions has the same Adreno 330 GPU and the usual set of sensors like accelerometer, compass, gryoscope, and proximity. All this power gets its food from a 2600mAh non removable Li-Po battery that is said to be giving a 20 hrs of talktime on 3G. And yes, the phone obviously supports 4G-LTE. No question at that. Comparing the Nexus 5 to Blackberry Z30. Coming back to the camera, the back has a dual camera setup both at 4mp with a dual LED flash. With the last year's One htc opted to go with a lower pixel count (4.3 mp to be precise) so that the larger pixels can grab more light and give better low light pictures. But that didn't really happen. Instead it was the most criticized feature of the Original One. Now with the new One, htc again opted to go with the same pixel count but with a dual camera setup. The results are yet to be concluded. Lets just hope htc has made a better camera this time. HamdiR_CONCEPT_M8f_on-VS-M7 Another criticized feature of the original One was the non expandable 32/64 GB Internal Storage. This time with the M8, htc has opted for the expandable storage on their device. It now has a 16/32 GB internal storage but also comes with expandable storage upto 128 GB.   The screen also has been upped from 4.7" to 5" keeping the same 1080p resolution. But the increased screen real estate is been taken by the on screen buttons. Keeping the htc logo beneath the screen on a thick black bar seems to be a bad choice as it makes up for such large bezels. Comparing it with the Nexus 5 having the same screen size will show you the difference. HTC-One-M8-2014-VS-Nexus-5-Front-1280x852 Along the software side, Htc has loaded the new One with android 4.4.2 KitKat with its proprietary user interface Sense 6 (they call it the Sixth Sense) on top. It also has a few goodies like Motion Launch which allows users to activate different apps and features using different gesture combinations. It also has a feature similar to LG's knock on. You pick up the phone, tap the screen twice and the phone comes to life. The left most home screen still houses blinkfeed. One more feature is that if you pick up your device while its ringing and keep it on your ear, it'll automatically answer the call. There's no dedicated camera button on the phone, but htc has placed a nice feature for that too. You pick up the device in landscape mode and press the volume button. Alas, you activated your camera. While motion features have become something common among the flagships, its nice to see htc join the game.   The new One does seem to be far better than the previous One in more ways than One. But it also has got its minus points. What are your views about the new One. Hit up in the comments.
